SNOWSHOE GEAR CHECKLIST
- Adjustable Snowshoe Poles
Adjustable snowshoeing poles should be an automatic purchase along with your snowshoes. Remember, you’re walking on snow, and there are a lot more ways to lose your balance than when walking on solid ground, and having a pair of poles ready can keep you on your feet. The other benefit of snowshoe poles is that they incorporate your upper body for a more well-rounded workout. Adjustable poles, unlike fixes poles, are nice in that they can be adjusted to the perfect height based on the terrain. If you’re descending, you can extend them so that you aren’t reaching downhill to plant them, or if you’re traversing, you can shorten the uphill pole and lengthen the downhill pole for better balance.

- Snowshoe Gaiters
Gaiters are another piece of essential gear when snowshoeing. Based on the depth and type of snow you’re in, inevitably you will sink a bit and snow will try its hardest to get in your boots. Gaiters will keep snow out and keep your feet and lower legs warm and dry. On warmer days, a pair of snowpants might be too hot, while a pair of gaiters is just right. Gaiters also offer protection and prevent brush, thorns and even your own snowshoe crampons from scratching or tearing pants and/or boots.

- Headlamp
Just because the sun has set doesn’t mean you can’t go snowshoeing. In fact, snowshoeing at night can be equally as enjoyable as during the day, if not more so. A quiet, tranquil winter night can make for a great romp. Today’s headlamps use LED bulbs to illuminate your way, which are bright and long lasting. LED headlamps are lightweight and can last for up to 100 hours between battery changes. Taking a headlamp along can also take the worry out of not making it back before the sun goes down.

- A Good Pair of Snowshoe Socks
Forget about putting on three pairs of socks in an attempt to stay warm. One good pair of technical, wicking socks is all you need. Multiple layers of socks can bunch up and cause blisters, and do no better at keeping your feet warm as one pair of well insulated and well made socks.

- Hand Warmers / Toe Warmers
Nothing can get you down faster than cold extremities, and sometimes it’s so cold that even the warmest socks or mittens available still aren’t warm enough, so be prepared and take along some toe and hand warmers. They heat up the air space around your feet and hands and keep your toes and fingers nice and cozy.
