These floation tails are the main reason I chose MSR snow shoes in the first place. No other company offers this modular sytem that I know of and it just makes perfect sense. Every time I go snowshoeing the conditions and terrain are different, plus I never know what I'm going to encounter when I head out on a new route. Sometimes I'm on hardpack snow and heavily travelled snowshoe trails so I don't need the tails at all. But whenever I'm blazing new trail I always use them. I highly recommend getting both the 4 inch and 8 inch sizes. They pack very easily in a backpack or inside a jacket. That way you can can just switch them out depending on how deep the snow is. They are very easy to pop on and off too, I can do them even with my mittens on.
